Leave Your Legacy at MSU

Dr. Xinyu Wu, Director of the Visiting International Professional Program (VIPP) at Michigan State University (MSU), recently traveled to Hong Kong and Beijing to meet with MSU alumni and other key university leaders. Learn more about this trip on our VIPP website. In Beijing, more than 50% of attendees at MSU’s reception were alumni from the VIPP program. Many of them missed their time at MSU, expressed their gratitude to our programs, and inquired about how they can contribute to MSU and leave their legacy with MSU.

MSU Spartans make a difference! ENGAGE: International Alumni Reunion took place in Hong Kong on May 19-21, 2017. Attendees participated in a beach clean-up project in Discovery Bay.

Leaving your legacy is easier than you think; You can make a contribution to establish or support an existing endowment housed within VIPP. Endowments are created through donations to MSU and benefit the institution in perpetuity. The sole intention of the endowment is to invest it so that the university can use the interest from invested capital to attract excellent students, provide scholarships, invest in new programs, hire exceptional professors, advance research, or upgrade university classrooms, technologies, and facilities. The idea is to cultivate a “support system” for students, scholars, faculty, and the university as a whole, to keep advancing and making a better tomorrow. Any contribution, big or small, helps further develop this support system.

Over the last 10 years, the MSU Endowment has more than doubled in size and was valued at $2.3 billion as of June 30, the end of the 2015/16 fiscal year. Over that time, the endowment has given more than $750 million back to the university in the form of student scholarships, endowed professor support, program support, and funds to the general budget.

VIPP Endowment funds are available to support visiting scholars wishing to attend academic conferences or events anywhere in the U.S. Chuanmei Huang attended a TESOL conference in Baltimore, April 2016.

During over 20 years of operation, VIPP also has established many endowments. Most of our endowments are country specific, dedicated to supporting partnership and international exchange for that particular country or region, including:

  • Afghanistan
  • Bhutan
  • Buddhist Civilization and Society
  • Burma
  • Central Asia
  • China
  • Egypt
  • Indonesia
  • Islamic Civilization and Society
  • Korea
  • Mongolia
  • Nepal
  • Ryukyu
  • Sri Lanka
  • Sweden
  • Thailand

Two endowments support VIPP scholars and programs, no matter where they are from or take place:

  • Visiting International Professional Program
  • Visiting International Professional and Educational Outreach Endowment Fund

The interest generated from these endowments have supported our scholars attending academic conferences in the U.S. For example, from 2015 to 2017, VIPP funded 13 Chinese scholars to attend academic conferences and professional development events in various U.S. cities through the China Endowment.
